Sheryl Anne Carreras

Sheryl Anne Carreras, 68, of Fredonia, formerly of Dunkirk died Monday morning (Jan. 2, 2023) at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dunkirk.

She was born Sept. 6, 1954 in Dunkirk, the daughter of the late Anthony C. and Helen (Macey) Barone.

A lifelong resident of the area, Sheryl was a graduate of Dunkirk High School, class of 1972. She then attended college in Erie, PA. For 40 years Sheryl worked as a stenographer at the Dunkirk Housing Authority, transcribing speech into shorthand. She was also a receptionist at the Housing Authority, along with helping residents who came into the office. She retired in 2019.

She was a parishioner of Holy Trinity Church and also a member of the Dunkirk Moose Lodge 89.

Sheryl was a loving Catholic who was always there to help her husband Lou, family and friends. In her free time Sheryl enjoyed saying the rosary with her husband and with Mother Angelica on EWTN.

Sheryl enjoyed listening to music, playing solitaire, and watching TV. Her favorite television programs were Leave It to Beaver and the Andy Griffith Show.

She also liked to bowl at Lucky Lanes, garden, collect recipes, and especially enjoyed spending time with her three feline companions.

Survivors include her husband, Lou Carreras, whom she married Dec. 22, 1995; and her sister, Sandy Barone of Fredonia.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass which will be celebrated Saturday, Jan. 14, at 10 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church. A luncheon will follow at the Kosciuszko Club. All friends and family of Sheryl are invited to join in this celebration. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Arrangements are by the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home.
