Robert E. Block, 91, of Dunkirk passed away Monday evening, June 3, 2024 at ECMC in Buffalo with his loving family by his side. Born on Aug. 2, 1932, in Dunkirk, son of the late Howard and Edith (Washington) Block.
After graduating from Dunkirk High School in 1950, he served in the US Army from 1956-1958. Robert furthered his academic pursuits by obtaining a Master's degree in Elementary Education from Fredonia State University.
Robert embarked on his career in 1954 as an Elementary teacher, eventually rising to the position of principal in several schools within Dunkirk. His unwavering dedication led him to become the Elementary Supervisor in 1971, a role he wholeheartedly fulfilled until his well-deserved retirement in 1990 after 36 years of service. His impact on the education system and the lives he touched along the way will be remembered for generations to come.
Outside of work, Robert was known for his warm personality and sense of humor. He had a mischievous side and delighted in playing practical jokes on those around him. His laughter was infectious, brightening the days of all who knew him.
One of Robert's most cherished traditions was baking Christmas cookies every year to share with family and friends and the time spent with them.
Robert harbored diverse interests that brought him immense joy. An aficionado of classic cars, he found solace in painting, gardening, bird watching, and woodworking. A devoted fan of the Buffalo Bills and Sabres, as well as an avid follower of NASCAR races.
Survived by his wife of 14 years, Barbara D. Block; children Deborah (Barry) Scott, Barbara Block, Robert Block, Thomas (Melinda) Block and step son Eric (Joanne) Helms; brother William Block; Grandchildren Christopher (Melissa) Scott, Matthew (Laura Sokol) Scott, Daniel (Amy) Scott, Chelsea Sterling and Jeffrey (Faith Scott), step grandchildren Madeline and Abigail Helms; Great Grandchildren Claire, Olivia, Magdalene, Elsa, Daphne, Evelyn and Leo Scott. Also survived by many nieces.
Preceding Robert are his wife Ada M. (Lawrence) Block; parents Howard and Edith (Washington) Block, and sister Barbara Block.
