Lawrence ‘Larry’ Thompson

Lawrence ‘Larry’ Thompson passed away May 16, 2022. He was born in Dunkirk on Sept. 28, 1935, to Roy J. and Edith M (Willson) Thompson.

He graduated from Dunkirk High School in 1953 and enlisted with the U.S. Army in 1954. He was stationed in Munich, Germany, as a tank driver, until his honorable discharge in 1956. Larry was proud of his service and proudly flew his flag everyday.

On July 27, 1957, he married Mary Anne Bentley, who predeceased him on March 8, 2016. They have four children and seven grandchildren who he was so proud of and always enjoyed hearing about their accomplishments.

Larry was employed by National Fuel Gas as a gas well tender until his retirement in 1995.

He was a past member of Dunkirk Hose 1 Flying Dutchmen, Jaycees, Elks Club and various local social clubs including Dom Polski, Conservation Club and American Legion Post 59.

He was a fan of NASCAR races, attending many Daytona 500s, drum corps competitions and loved traveling to Florida with his family. He was well known as an avid walker of the Avenue for many years. A creature of habit, the best parts of his day were meeting friends out for breakfast and afternoons at the club.

Larry was a caring Dad and Grandpa who put his family first. He enjoyed yearly family reunions at the Point. And, as all of our family and friends know, he made pool parties extra special every summer.

He is loved and deeply missed by his children: Patricia Thompson, Scott (Lisa) Thompson, Susan Francis and Jason Thompson; grandchildren: Jessica (Alexis) Dillin, Kelly (Ryan Golubski) Brown, Scott Thompson, Katie (Christopher) Townsell, Ethan Francis, Emily Thompson and Jordan Francis; sisters: Barbara (late Theodore) Eberly and Ruth (Bronislaus) Skubis; and nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are welcome to attend a memorial service at Willowbrook Park Cemetery on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at 11 a.m. Full military honors will be accorded by the Dunkirk Joint Veterans Council Honor Guard, with a luncheon to follow at Campano’s Cucina Restaurant, 31 E. Main St., Fredonia.

Arrangements are by the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home.
