Joseph C. Catalano

He was born May 5, 1926 in Dunkirk, the son of the late George and Mary (Gullo) Catalano.

A lifelong Dunkirk resident, Joseph was a graduate of Dunkirk High School, Class of 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 during World War II. He was a kind and caring man and loved his family most of all.

He had been employed as a milkman at Briggs Dairy in Dunkirk, retiring after 42 years of service and was a parishioner of Holy Trinity Church and the Holy Name Society. He also worked at Cease’s Commissary and at the U.S. Post Office in his earlier years. He was a former member of the Acquavia Post and the Columbus Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen (Joseph) Carrus and Debra (Kenneth) Buck, both of Dunkirk; six grandchildren, Scott (Fay) Sinare, Jill (Mario) Avila, Jeffrey (Becca) Carrus, Kristen (Jon) Rajewski, Kenneth (Erika) Buck II, and Heather Buck; 11 great-grandchildren, Anthony Sinare, Genivieve Sinare, Nico Avila, Giuliana Avila, Carmen Avila, Harper Carrus, Easton Carrus, Elijah Rajewski, Micah Rajewski, Avery Buck and Kennedy Buck; and also several nieces and nephews survive. The family would also like to acknowledge and thank the staff at Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation in Dunkirk, for their kind and compassionate care of Joseph.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice T. Catalano; daughter, Sandra L. (Anthony) Sinare; infant daughter, Cynthia Catalano; infant grandson, Daniel Buck; three sisters, Teresa Clarke, Martha Capitano, and Frances Damico; and one brother, John Catalano. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated Friday, Sept. 15, at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Trinity Church. There will be no prior visitation. Full military honors will be accorded by the Dunkirk Joint Veterans Council Honor Guard. Entombment will be in the Assumption Mausoleum of St. Mary’s Cemetery, Dunkirk. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Church. Arrangements are by the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home.
