John A. Scott

May 13, 1950 — December 5, 2024

Dunkirk, NY

John A. Scott, 74, passed away unexpectedly on December 5, 2024 in his beloved hometown of

Dunkirk, NY. He was preceded by his wife Shirley (Swift) Scott and his parents. He will be

fondly remembered by his son John J. (Courtney) of Durham, NC; daughter Megan E. Miller

(Michael) of Syracuse, NY; brother James Scott of Jackson, MI and sister Rose Prinzi of

Jamestown, NY. His adoration of his grandchildren Wyatt, Elouise, Penelope, and Charlie was

mutual, and his love of ice cream and warm hugs will stay with them always.

John graduated from Dunkirk High School ('68) and earned a bachelor's in social studies ('72),

followed by a Masters in Education and certificate of advanced studies in administration at

SUNY Fredonia.

John taught in the Dunkirk City School District for 35 years. He began at Dunkirk High School

teaching social studies and serving as senior advisor, then found his true calling teaching 7th

grade. It was said to be a good fit because he never really matured beyond 7th grade. He firmly

believed all students could succeed if given a chance. After retiring in 2007, he maintained close

relationships with many students and teachers.

Beyond the classroom, John was a passionate supporter of Dunkirk athletics. He coached

varsity and junior varsity football for several years but determined his best support was cheering

loudly from the stands. Even after retirement, he regularly attended football games.

He loved traveling with friends and family, with regular trips to Myrtle Beach, Colorado, and

Bonita Springs, Florida. While he and Shirley spent several winters in Florida, his heart

remained in Dunkirk.

In his community, John was involved with Rural Ministry and Revitalize Dunkirk. He was

particularly proud of his work at Point Gratiot Nature Trail and planting trees at one of his

favorite places, hoping future generations would enjoy them. Always a good neighbor, he valued

his relationships on Robin Street, both past and present.

A Celebration of his life will be held at the Kosciuszko Club, 252 Nevins Street, Dunkirk on

December 12 from 4 - 8 PM. Contributions in his memory may be made to Revitalize Dunkirk,

Inc. (PO Box 107, Dunkirk, NY 14048); the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation

directed toward Scott-Valone Family Fund (212 Lake Shore Drive West, Dunkirk, NY 14048); or

a charity of your choice.
