John E. Ley Jr.

John E. Ley Jr., passed away unexpectedly on Dec. 17, 2023, at his home in Dunkirk, New York. He was born on Sept. 2, 1966, in Dunkirk, the beloved son of John E. Ley Sr. and Betty C. (Pearsall) Ley.

John graduated from Dunkirk High School in 1984 before pursuing further education online to earn an associate’s degree.

John had a fulfilling career as a truck driver, working for various companies within the western New York region. He was known for commitment to his work. John took great pride in his role as a caregiver to his dogs, Betty, Nugget, Loki, Jordan, and Coco. His love for animals was evident in the way he cared for them.

Outside of work, John cherished spending time with his loved ones. He particularly enjoyed playing basketball with his stepdaughter Suzie and creating lasting memories with family and friends. John had a heart of gold and was always there to lend a helping hand or provide support when needed.

In his free time, John pursued various hobbies and interests that brought him joy. He loved traveling and exploring new places, as well as the freedom he felt while riding motorcycles. John had a passion for food and appreciated indulging in delicious meals. He also enjoyed playing darts and was an avid pool player who delighted in friendly competitions with his loved ones.

Sports held a special place in John’s heart, especially football and baseball. He was an avid fan of the Buffalo Bills and the Seattle Mariners. Attending their games brought him immense pleasure and allowed him to share memorable experiences with those closest to him.

Described as fun-loving and easy to be around, John had an infectious spirit that brightened the lives of those around him. His step-son, Jonathan Cotton, and step-daughter, Suzie Nebrich, had a special place in his heart, and he was immensely proud to be their step-father. John’s genuine care for his family and friends was evident in everything he did.

John leaves behind a loving girlfriend, Gretchen Nebrich, who shared many cherished moments with him. He is also survived by his brothers Timothy Ley and Christopher Ley, sister Tracey Miller, and Tracey’s boyfriend, Don McDermott. John will be deeply missed by his nephews Shane Miller, Sean Ley, Weston Ley, and nieces Lindsay Polvino, Candice Polvino, Emma Ley, and Olivia Ley.

John is preceded by his parents John and Betty (Pearsall) Ley and grandparents Alice and Garfield Ley, and Richard and Grace Pearsall.

Family and friends are welcome to call from 2-4 p.m. & 7-9 p.m. on Dec. 20, 2023 at McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home on Central Avenue.
