Edwin A. Mekus, 94, of Cassadaga passed away on Jan. 27, 2024, at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehab Center. He was born on June 30, 1929, in Dunkirk to the late Alexander and Emily (Kazmierczak) Mekus.
Edwin had a fulfilling career where he worked at True Temper in Dunkirk for many years. In addition to his tenure at True Temper, he also served as a caretaker for the Town of Pomfret and Cassadaga, diligently maintaining various cemeteries.
Described as a quiet and mild-mannered individual, Edwin was well liked and respected by everyone who had the pleasure of crossing paths with him.
Edwin was a proud veteran who served in the United States Navy from 1948 to 1956. He exemplified patriotism through his selfless service to his country. The sacrifices he made during his military service will always be remembered and revered.
Edwin found joy in various hobbies and interests. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who appreciated spending time surrounded by nature. Additionally, he was a fan of the Buffalo Bills.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Marie (Elliott) Mekus. Edwin is also survived by his sons Michael Mekus, Christopher Mekus, and Garrett Mekus; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Additionally, he leaves behind many nieces and nephews
Preceding Edwin are his parents Alexander and Emily (Kazmierczak) Mekus, daughter Cindy Winterberger, and brother William Mekus.
