Alojzy “Al” Poweski, 93, of Dunkirk, died Friday morning (Aug. 12, 2022) at Brooks Memorial Hospital.
He was born Dec. 12, 1928 in Dunkirk, the son of the late Valentine and Angela (Herdzik) Poweski.
A lifelong Dunkirk resident, Al served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 48. He had been employed as a professional firefighter for the City of Dunkirk.
He was a member of First Ward Falcon Club, Dom Polski Club, Kosciuszko Club, Shorewood Country Club and Dunkirk Hose Company No. 1 , and Dunkirk Hose Company No. 1 Drum and Bugle Corps Flying Dutchmen. Al was also a member of the American Legion Post 62, where he was a past commander.
He enjoyed the Buffalo Bills, Sabres, and was a season ticket holder for both teams for many years. He was one of the founders of the Bills Backers of Dunkirk. He also was a linesman for all of the home games of the Dunkirk High School Football team. He was a big supporter of anything in Dunkirk and was very proud of his city. He loved playing golf too.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda (Lamb) Poweski, whom he married Oct. 22, 1949; one son, Allen (Susan) Poweski of Sherrills Ford, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Kim Robillard Poweski of Auburn; four grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Steven T. Poweski; six brothers; and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.
