Alicia “Carol” Dechard

Alicia “Carol” DeChard, 79, of Dunkirk passed away Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2024 at St. Vincent Hospital in Erie, PA. Born in Dunkirk on Dec. 11, 1944, daughter of the late Arthur and Mary Jane (Bialaszewski) Begier.

Carol dedicated 22 years of her career as a cook at Suny Fredonia FSA, where she brought joy to many with her delicious meals. Her culinary skills were admired by colleagues and students alike.

Outside of work, Carol had a variety of hobbies and interests that brought her happiness. She enjoyed indulging in arts and crafts, exploring genealogy, and traveling to new places.

Carol’s accomplishments extended beyond her professional life. She served as a Firefighter EMT for the Lily Dale Fire Department, and even worked at a few training camps for the Buffalo Bills. Additionally, she was an active member of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church and formed the Lily Dale Crafters Guild, sharing her creativity with others. Alicia’s dedication to shaping young lives was evident as she served as an assistant Girl Scout leader in Cassadaga.

Carol’s presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her kind heart, unwavering determination, and love for animals touched the lives of many. She will be remembered as a warm and caring individual who brought comfort to those around her.

She is survived by her loving sons Jason DeChard and Ronald (Charlene) DeChard. Carol found great joy in being a grandmother to Katelyn (John) Smart, Sara (Joshua) Welch, and Alexander DeChard. She is also survived by her brother Edward (Gloria) Begier, sisters Donna (Fred) Nimmon, Kathleen Briggs, and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Carol is her husband of 56 years, Ronald H. DeChard who passed away May 13, 2023. Also preceding her are her parents Arthur and Mary Jane (Bialaszewski) Begier, brother Phillip Begier.

Friends and family are welcome to attend calling hours on Tues. Jan. 30, 2024 from 11-1 pm with prayer services starting at 1 pm at McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Westfield Canine Rescue.
